How Often Should You Actually Get a Body Massage?

How often should you actually get a body massage? Our therapists explain what's realistic for stress relief and muscle health, not just a sales pitch.

What a massage actually does for you

A good massage improves circulation, loosens tight muscles and lowers cortisol levels temporarily — real, measurable effects, but ones that fade over days to weeks without repetition. It's not a one-time fix for chronic tension any more than a single meal fixes long-term nutrition. It's also not something your body needs on a fixed schedule the way sleep or water is.

A realistic frequency guide

The right frequency depends entirely on what you're trying to solve.

  • General stress relief or self-care — once every three to four weeks is enough for most people to feel the benefit without it becoming just routine
  • Desk-job tension in the neck, shoulders or lower back — every two weeks, since this kind of tightness rebuilds quickly with daily posture habits
  • Recovering from a specific strain or overuse — weekly for two to three weeks, then tapering off once the tightness resolves
  • Before a big event such as a wedding or function — one sitting about a week out is plenty; closer to the day risks unexpected soreness or reaction

Signs your body is actually asking for one

Persistent shoulder or neck stiffness that doesn't ease with stretching, tension headaches showing up more than once a week, or noticing you're clenching your jaw through the day are all reasonable prompts to book, rather than waiting for a fixed calendar date.

When more frequent isn't better

Weekly massage for general relaxation, with no specific muscular issue, usually plateaus in benefit after the first few sessions — you're paying for something your body has already absorbed the value of. We'd rather tell a regular client to space out their visits than keep booking them out of habit.

Frequently asked questions

Is it fine to get a massage every week?

It's not harmful, but for general stress relief the benefit usually plateaus after a few sessions. Weekly makes more sense if you're actively recovering from a specific strain.

What's the difference between a full body massage and a head, neck and shoulder massage?

A full body massage runs about 60 minutes and covers the whole body; the shorter therapy focuses specifically on tension in the neck and shoulders in about 30 minutes — useful if that's your main problem area and you're short on time.

Is it safe to get a massage during your period or during pregnancy?

Light massage is generally fine during periods. For pregnancy, we adjust pressure and positioning and recommend mentioning it when booking so the right therapist and technique are arranged.
