What keratin treatment actually does

Keratin smoothening is a chemical service, not a conditioning one. A protein formula is worked through the hair to relax the internal bonds that cause frizz and volume, then sealed in with heat. It doesn't wash out like a mask — it grows out gradually over four to six months, which is the key difference from a hair spa, which conditions but doesn't restructure the hair.

Who it's genuinely for

Keratin suits certain hair types and habits far more than others.

  • Hair that's frizzy or unmanageable and takes 30+ minutes of straightening every morning
  • Hair that's dry or frizz-prone but not already heavily bleached or chemically damaged
  • Anyone tired of losing the fight against humidity by midday, especially through Vindhyachal's monsoon and summer months

Why we sometimes say no

If your hair is already over-processed from repeated colour or a previous smoothening gone wrong, we'll usually recommend two or three hair spa sittings first, so there's healthy hair to actually smoothen. We will say no to keratin on hair that can't take it — that's not us being difficult, it's us trying to avoid making it worse.

What happens in the chair

The service itself follows a consistent process, usually two to three hours depending on hair length and thickness:

  1. Wash with a clarifying shampoo to strip existing product
  2. Section and apply the keratin formula, left to sit
  3. Blow-dry, then flat-iron in small sections to seal the treatment with heat
  4. Rinse — a light rinse, not a full wash — and finish

The 72-hour rule and other aftercare

The first three days after treatment decide how well it holds.

  • No washing, tying, clipping or tucking hair behind your ears for 72 hours
  • Sleep with hair loose and flat, not in a bun
  • Switch to a sulphate-free shampoo permanently afterward — regular shampoo strips the treatment faster
  • Avoid swimming pools for the first couple of weeks; chlorine breaks it down early

Cost and how long it actually lasts here

Keratin treatments at the salon start around ₹4,500 depending on hair length and thickness. In Vindhyachal's humidity, most clients get four to five months of noticeably smoother hair before it needs a touch-up, closer to six months if you book a hair spa sitting every six weeks in between to maintain it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a keratin treatment actually last?

Typically four to six months, depending on hair type, how often you wash it, and Vindhyachal's humidity through the year. Regular hair spa sittings in between stretch the result.

Is keratin treatment safe for regularly coloured hair?

Yes, but sequencing matters — ideally colour first, wait two weeks, then do keratin. Doing it the other way around can affect how the colour holds.

Does keratin treatment contain formaldehyde?

We use formaldehyde-free formulas only. Ask to see the product used before your service at any salon — you're entitled to know what's going on your hair.
